I propose an experiment. It’s a simple test for any organization starting a new email list for an event, campaign, or the organization itself.

Email News List vs. Social Network

  1. On the same day that you begin gathering old addresses from spreadsheets and databases, create a new LinkedIn group.
  2. While you draft text to invite new people to your email list, ask your agency’s staff to join the LinkedIn group.
  3. On the same day you add a web form so new people can join your email list, ask your coworkers to invite all their clients and colleagues to join the LinkedIn group.
  4. When you send out your first newsletter, send it to your list and to the LinkedIn group.

The Results

  • How large was each list initially?
  • How quickly does each list grow?
  • How many replies does each message generate?
  • What offline engagement results from each?

Did you try this experiment? We’d love to hear your results. Need help with your new media strategy? Drop us a note.
